With gas prices getting higher and higher, more and more people are performing maintenance and repairs to their vehicles instead of paying someone else to do it. Every make and model vehicle comes with its own type of fuel filter. Each fuel filter has its own unique method for replacing the fuel filter. Before getting into the fuel filter replacement process, look over the benefits of replacing the fuel filter yourself.
Benefits of Replacing the Fuel Filter
The fuel filter is a benefit to the fuel system because it prevents impurities from getting into the fuel injectors and into the engine. This process will overall have a positive impact on the vehicles fuel consumption. Here are a few of the benefits that will significantly make a difference in the performance of the engine.
- Saves the vehicle owner time and money.
- Prevents sediments and impurities from entering into the fuel injectors and the engine.
- Significantly improves the fuel mileage of the vehicle especially if the fuel filter is clogged.
- Changing the fuel filter on a constant basis as recommended by the vehicles manufacturer will keep the engine running smoother and more efficiently.
Keeping the fuel filter changed at the proper intervals will greatly benefit the fuel system and the engine. Each vehicle manufacturer has their own set of fuel filter replacement intervals. Check the owners manual for the proper intervals for your vehicle make and model.
Different Types Of Fuel Filters
As stated earlier. each vehicle comes with its own unique style of fuel filter. Each vehicles fuel filter requires its own method for removing and installing the fuel filters. Here is a list of the different types of fuel filters that can be found on all make and model vehicles. Each of the fuel filters can also be found at most all auto parts stores.
- Basic Screw-on Fuel Filters- These type of fuel filters have threaded ports on each side of the fuel filter that the fuel lines screw onto. A open end wrench is all that is needed to remove and reinstall the fuel lines to the fuel filter.
- Screw-on/Quick Connect- These type of fuel filters have a threaded port on one need and a quick connect fitting port on the other end. The quick connect end requires a fuel line quick disconnect tool to remove the fuel line from the port.
- Standard Quick Connect Fuel Filter- These type of fuel filters have a quick connect fitting on both ends of the fuel filter ports. The quick disconnect tool is also required to remove the fuel lines from each side of the fuel filter ports.
- Basic Rubber Hose Fuel Filters- These type of fuel filters have a rubber hose that is attached to each end of the fuel filter port by a hose clamp and a screwdriver.
- Plastic Clip Fuel Filters- There are two types of plastic clip fuel filters. The first type is a squeeze type that when the end of the fuel line is squeezed together, the fuel line disconnects from the fuel filter port. The second plastic clip type locks the fuel lines to the fuel filter ports. The plastic locking clips can be pried out of the fuel line and reinstalled into the fuel lines with a flathead screwdriver.
Each vehicle manufacturer requires a specific fuel filter for for a specific make and model vehicle. Most all auto parts stores have the proper fuel filter information readily available for your make and model vehicle.
Different Tools Needed to Replace the Fuel Filter
Most all fuel filters require a different tool to replace the fuel filter. Each fuel filter has inlet and outlet ports that are designed in a specific way so that the fuel lines can lock onto the ports. The tool that is needed to remove and replace the fuel lines from the fuel filter can be determined by looking at the fuel line connections that connect to the fuel filter ports. Also, most all auto parts stores have the specific tool information for all fuel filters. Acquire about the fuel filter tool at the parts store if needed.
- Open end wrench set
- Quick disconnect fuel line removal tool
- Flathead screwdriver/Phillips head screwdriver
Use each tool to remove and reinstall the end of the fuel lines to the ports on each end of the fuel filter. As stated, there is a specific tool for each type of fuel filter.
How to Remove the Old Fuel Filter
- Unscrew the gas cap from the gas tank to remove all of the gas pressure from the fuel filter and the fuel lines.
- Locate the location of the fuel filter. The main fuel filter locations are under the hood inside of the engine compartment, inside of the driver side or passenger side frame rail, behind the gas tank or above the gas tank. Jack the vehicle up if necessary and put jack stands under the vehicle as a safety precaution.
- Place a drip pan under the general location of the fuel filter. Determine the type of fuel lines that are attached to the fuel filter. Use the appropriate tool to remove the fuel lines from each end of the fuel filter.
- If the quick disconnect tool is needed, insert the end of the tool into the end of the fuel line. Press the end of the tool into the end of the fuel line until the fuel line unlocks from the fuel filter port. Pull the fuel line straight off of the fuel filter when the fuel line unlocks from the port and remove the tool. Do this to both quick connect fuel lines. If the fuel lines have plastic clips, either squeeze the plastic clips together or remove the plastic clips from the fuel lines.
- Pull the fuel lines straight off of each end of the fuel filter. Allow the fuel lines to hang down near the drip pan to catch any excess fuel that might drip out of the fuel lines. Pull the fuel filter out of the filter bracket. Remove any mounting bolts from the filter bracket if necessary to get the filter out of the bracket. Discard the old fuel filter into the drip pan.
Installing the New Fuel Filter
- Insert the new fuel filter into the filter bracket. Secure the filter to the bracket with any mounting bolts if necessary.
- Secure each fuel line to each end of the fuel filter ports. Use a open end wrench to tighten the screw-on fuel lines. If the fuel lines are rubber, use a screwdriver to tighten the hose clamps around the rubber fuel lines that connect to each port. If the fuel lines are quick connect lines, push the lines straight onto the ports until they lock in place. Do the same thing for the squeeze together plastic clip fuel lines. If the fuel line has the locking plastic clip, push the fuel lines straight onto the fuel filter port and insert the plastic locking clip into the fuel filter behind the fuel filter port. This will secure the fuel lines to the fuel filter ports.
- Inspect the fuel lines to ensure that they are secure and tight to each end of the fuel filter. Slide the drip pan out from under the vehicle. Screw the gas cap back onto the gas tank tightly.
- Turn the ignition key to the accessory position for about five seconds and then turn the key back off. Repeat this two more times. Then crank the engine and let it run while inspecting the fuel lines and the new fuel filter for any leaks.
- Turn the engine off and shut the hood.
Tips:
- Fuel filters for all different make and model vehicles can be found at most all auto parts stores.
- A quick disconnect fuel line removal tool can also be found at most all auto parts stores.
Warnings:
- Never smoke or use open flames around any type of fuel.
- Never dispose of fuel or used fuel filters onto the ground or the trash. Refer to local and state laws that pertain to the discarding of used fuel and used fuel filters.
